This Week’s Message From the Coach Dodd
Thank you to all the Blue Devils’ faithful fans that travelled to Milford to see the exciting, yet disappointing contest with MCP. As you can see, the co-op with Cisna Park has really boosted the total numbers and the athleticism of the Bear Cats. The Blue Devils controlled the clock and the line of scrimmage most of the night. The defense had breakdowns when it came to the long pass late in each half. MCP totaled 74 yards rushing and 132 yards passing (94 of those on two plays). MCP scored with 1 second left in the half, and 16 seconds left in the game. A truly hard-to-accept 26-24 loss…
Quarterback Michael Grant scored two touchdowns and sophomore Reed Collins scored the other. Junior kicker Ian Park made all three extra points including his second field goal of the season. Kyle Lamm and Reed Collins caught two passes each. Senior Danny Golden was injured in the second quarter and it is not known yet how serious the injury may be. We will all hope for the best. Branden Smith got out of the hospital this week and is now recovering at home.
The Big Hit for the week is awarded to Dillon Ervin. The Defensive Player of the Game was Ross Darby who had 9 tackles. Ian Park was the Special Teams Player of the Game scoring six points. The Offensive Player of the Week is Reed Collins who rushed for 87 yards. Lineman of the Game was Cody Longest. Scout Team Player of the Week was Sam Shoaf.
The JV squad hosted MCP on Monday night and defeated the Bear Cats 45-19. Krystian Ingram threw for 113 yards and a touchdown. Ingram also scored 2 touchdowns running and another on a 68 yard interception return. Tyler Russell rushed for 105 yards on 7 carries. Hunter Petersen caught an 8 yard touchdown pass from Ingram and Chase Whorrall caught two passed for 72 yards. Fullback Sam Shoaf scored twice and freshman Kevin Allen scored once. The Defense held MCP to 171 total yard, most of which came in the 4th quarter. Freshman Austin Reinken blocked a punt and Morgan Supergan kicked an extra point. The JV team is now 3-0!
The next opponent for the Blue Devils will be the Westville Tigers. They have a 2-1 record after being defeated by Salt Fork last week. They are led by quarterback #11 Matt Maser and running back #2 Brandon Severado. The Tigers have dominated the Vermilion Valley conference for the last 8 years. It will be even tougher for the Blue Devils having to face Westville after their first loss of the season. The 6th ranked Tigers are coached by Guy Goodlove and his teams are known for their toughness, speed, and hitting ability.
As disappointed as we are with the loss, our players will continue to work hard to improve. The life lessons we learn on this journey are sometimes difficult but very necessary. Our goals have not changed. There was a lot of emotion shown on the field on Friday night…most of it due to our players still feeling bad about the injury to their friend and teammate Branden Smith. I don’t know how much this affected our play but I am sure of one thing; we have great kids who care about each other…and that should make everyone very proud. “TOGETHER”
Go Blue!
