A Message From the Coach….

I hope the Blue Devils faithful stay behind this group of athletes after a disappointing loss to St. Thomas More. The offense struggled mightily gaining only 5 first downs. Defensively, the Devils played hard. Eight turnovers were too much to overcome. We gave up one big touchdown run in the first quarter but after that we made some good plays. The defense gave up 249 total yards but had to be on the field too much. The Sabers were a 4A playoff team last season and look like they will be there again this year.

The Big Hit for the week is awarded to Josh Kessler. The Defensive Player of the Game was Alex Hahne who came off the bench to record 7 tackles (three for a loss). Ian Park was the Special Teams Player of the Game making a touchdown saving tackle on a kick return. Lineman of the Game was Branden Smith. Scout Team Player of the Week was Krystian Ingram.

The JV squad went to St. Thomas More on Monday night and pulled out a hard fought victory in overtime, 18-12. Krystian Ingram threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns. The winning score in overtime was an Ingram pass to Adam Baker for 13 yards. The game ended when Freshman Austin Reinken sacked the Sabers’ quarterback on 4^th down. The Blue Devils defense held the Sabers to -34 yards rushing and 78 total yards for the game.

The next opponent will be Villa Grove. They have a great winning tradition and finished last season with a 10-1 record. Leading the Villa Grove Blue Devils is junior fullback/linebacker #30 John Turner. Turner scored 3 touchdowns last week in a victory against Georgetown Ridge Farm…Two on offense and 1 on defense. Other skilled players are #7 Earvin Westray and #14 Cody Deppe. Offensive Guard/Linebacker AJ Woodworth is an imposing player. Villa Grove will have a lot of speed and a huge offensive line, averaging 245 lbs per player. They do not start a single sophomore. An added challenge will be the 1 hour 40 minute road trip. This week will be another tough opponent for your Blue Devils.

Our team was very disappointed in their performance against St. Thomas More. They have made the commitment to get better this week. One thing I can guarantee is that our players are good kids with a lot of pride and they will prepare well. Underclassmen starting Friday night will be Sophomores Adam Baker, Josh Kessler, Chase Whorrall, Reed Collins and Freshman Morgan Supergan. These young players learned about Varsity football Friday night and that experience will spur on their growth. As I told my team, we could have played a bad team Friday and won 40-0 and learned nothing. After playing our first game, we know exactly where we need to improve and we plan on showing that this week. Keep the Faith…
