This Week’s Message From the Coach Dodd
A poor performance is the only way I can describe last week’s game with Salt Fork. You cannot make mistakes against good teams. We made plenty of mistakes fumbling three times and throwing two interceptions. Salt Fork made us pay scoring 28 points off turnovers. The Devils defense did a decent job holding the Storm’s leading rusher to 29 yards on the ground, however, he caught four passes and scored two touchdowns. It was bad from the start as the Blue Devils gave up a 90 yard kick return to start the game. The only thing to do is to learn from it and move on to get better. This has been a great week of practice…we have the players’ attention again.
Most of the highlights happened on defense where there were many big hits. Ross Darby and Reed Collins had good nights with 13 and 10 tackles. Luke Thornsbrough played his second game at linebacker and played much better in recording 10 tackles. Dakota Patton played a solid defensive game also getting 10 tackles.
The Big Hit for the week is awarded to freshman Morgan Supergan. The Defensive Player of the Game was Ross Darby. Special Teams Player of the Game was Luke Thornsbrough who blocked a punt. The Offensive Player of the Week is Michael Grant who passed for 98 yards. Lineman of the Game was Luke Thornsbrough. Scout Team Player of the Week was Aaron Bell and Joey Moulton.
The JV squad played Salt Fork on Monday night and defeated the Storm 16-6. Tyler Russell and Adam Baker each scored a touchdown and Sam Shoaf scored both two-point conversions. Krystian Ingram completed two passes on the windy night. One was to Hunter Petersen and the other was to Baker for a touchdown. The JV squad is now 5-0 after defeating the previously unbeaten Storm JV. Great Job!
The next opponent for the Blue Devils will be the Oakwood Armstrong Potomac (OAP) Comets. They have a 3-0 conference record and are 4-1 overall. They are currently leading the conference. They are led by #11 quarterback Trace McClintock and Sophomore running back #32 Ryan Strange. Oakwood will bring out a powerful running game that has dominated conference opponents. Their wins have been by impressive scores; 49-23 over Schlarman, 46-0 over Hoopeston, and 41-14 against Georgetown last week. They are on a roll and it is also their homecoming game.
The Blue Devils are now 2-3; last year we were 0-5 at this time. This week is a very important game. If we are able to win, it sets us up for a run at making the playoffs. If we lose, we would have to win all three remaining games to qualify. Our schedule has been very difficult. The three teams who have beaten us have a combined record of 13-2. Now comes the 4-1 Comets. This will truly be a test of character for our kids…I believe in them.
